Mark Antony was a Roman general and statesman, who served as co-ruler of Rome from 43 B.C. until he died. Antony and Gaius Octavian became co-rulers with Marcus Lepidus after the death of the Roman ruler Julius Caesar. Antony later married Celeopatra, the queen of Egypt, and the two combined their military forces. Antony hoped to gain sole control of Rome. However the forces of Antony and Celeopatra lost the decisive Battle of Actium in 31 BC. Antony was born into an important Roman family. In 54 BC, he became a cavalry officer under Julius Caesar.
