“Woe to that child which when kissed on the forehead tastes salty, for he is bewitched and soon must die.” Northern European folklore, though a salty brow was the least of that child’s worries that at the time was the way people found out that their child was going to die. How horrible this disease was, it slapped life in the face and left a salty after taste in your mouth to boot.
