Sparta Sparta was a city-state in Greece on the southern part of the Balkan Peninsula in Laconia. This city-state was predominately a military society. City-states were independent geographical locations usually surrounded by walls with their own form of government. Because of the mountainous rugged terrain of Greece, communication and travel were relatively impossible. The independent city-states hated when others interfered and so when two happened upon the other they often ended up fighting each other.
