The basic underlying philosophical idea of Utilitarianism upholds the belief that the action that creates the highest aggregate happiness is the morally right thing to do. Furthermore, if an action were to lower the aggregate of happiness then that action would not be morally justifiable. An objection to the theory of Utilitarianism is the fact that proponents of this theory must admit that in certain situations the institution of slavery is morally justifiable.
