When the North American Free Trade Agreement, otherwise known as NAFTA, was passed, an unconstituted and unprecedented experiment in social and economic policy began. For never before had three nations with such unequal economies been so forcibly put together and forced to do business.
NAFTA opponents forecasted an economic disaster. The public also seemed to be on their side. Public opinion polls in both the U.S. and Mexico consistently found a majority of people opposed to NAFTA.
